USO-Metro has almost 50 employees and more than 1800 volunteers. Between internships and full-time jobs, we usually have 2 to 5 new open positions posted at any given time.

You may note that often, higher level positions (manager, director and vice-president) are not posted externally. This is because we promote from within; we have a wealth of talent inside the organization that continues to grow with us in skill level and achievement because of on the job training, formal internal and external training and management guided professional development opportunities.

We hire employees into 4 main functional areas: Internal Operations (finance, human resources and IT); Marketing, Entertainment and Development; Center and Field Operations; Executive Office.

Employee Spotlight

Name: Ashy Palliparambil
Job Title: Resiliency Programs Manager
Department: Center Operations
What do you do at USO-Metro? I oversee the Resiliency Programs here at the USO Warrior and Family Centers. These are programs that prepare service members for civilian life, and they can be broken down into three areas of focus: Transition Programs, Music and Art Therapy, and Outdoor Activities. I primarily focus on the Music and Art Therapy Programs – coordinating various programs like children’s art activities, caregiver paint nights, and therapeutic workshops for ill, wounded, and injured. We focus on emotional wellness and self-expression.
How did you get started in the non-profit world? I actually worked in IT for four years after getting my degree in Computer Science, and I just felt that it wasn’t my passion – I wasn’t happy or satisfied. I began looking for opportunities to volunteer in my area, and I discovered a position in Art Therapy. After an informational interview to understand what the job was about, I said “this is what I’m supposed to do.” So, I quit my job, and got my Master’s Degree in Art Therapy. I found my passion in helping people. When people ask me how I found this position, I always say the same thing: I didn’t know it at the time, but I’d been dreaming about this job long before I’d known about it. Now, I can’t imagine not working for a non-profit, not working here, and not helping people.
What is one thing you like about your job? My favorite part about the job is seeing the transformation of a person. We’ve had a few service members that have gone through programs where who they are at the end of the program is not who they were when they entered. It’s seeing the change, and knowing the programs were a part of the recovery.
What do you like about USO-Metro as an organization? I like our mission. Being a not-for-profit, you are surrounded by like-minded people that are focused on what we’re trying to accomplish and what we need to do to accomplish that.
What qualities do you think are important in candidates applying to work at USO-Metro? Passion, Integrity, Inspired by our Mission, just ready to work and have fun – this is such a unique organization. I love it.
What programs or events are you most looking forward to in 2018? I’m most looking forward to the Combat Paper/ Warrior Writer Exhibits this year. These are week long workshops for service members where they will transform their uniforms into “Combat Paper,” and use this paper to narrate their experience through original works of art and writing. The public is welcome to come, and I really feel that it bridges the gap between our military and civilian communities. The next Combat Paper will occur June 15th 7-9pm at The Art League (808 North Fairfax Street, Alexandria, VA 22314).

Internships at USO-Metro

USO-Metro recruits bright, energetic and mission-driven college and graduate students for part-time and full-time internships during the summer, fall and spring semesters.

Before joining the USO Warrior and Family Center at Fort Belvoir as a Center Coordinator, Sara Martin served as a USO-Metro Programs Intern in Fort Belvoir, Virginia.

Austin White served as a USO-Metro Sports Program Intern at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall in Arlington, Virginia.

While our internships are unpaid, they do offer challenging, meaningful work that advances the intern’s knowledge and skills while also assisting in the overall mission of USO-Metro to connect our military to family, home and country. Additionally, interns are provided with formal professional development opportunities and regular feedback throughout their internship.
